Description
The Other Side, By Jacqueline Woodson
There is a fence that segregates the black and white sections of town. Clover and Annie want to play together but know better than to cross the fence line or disobey adult rules. Finally, the two girls conclude that the adults said they couldn’t ‘cross’ the fence, but never said anything about ‘sitting’ on the fence. Fence sitting allows their friendship to build over the summer.
The Other Side is narrated from a child’s view, while beautiful watercolor depictions show a rural America during the segregation era. Jacqueline Woodson tells a complicated story in a very simple manner. The story has an open ended conclusion which allows and encourages discussion.
