I can remember when I couldn’t read. Phonics and putting the sounds together to make words was too hard. I did not look forward to reading in school. Then, one day, mom found her Dick and Jane book. I don’t know why it helped me, but suddenly I could read! The words made sense because I could recognize them. Now, I read all the time. These are my top ten favorite childhood books. I know other kids will like them too! (Read details about how Andrew learned to read here.)

The Gruffalo
This was one of my favorite childhood books when I was younger. It is a fun, rhyming book about a mouse that is hunting for a nut. Each time, three bigger animals try to stop him, the mouse invents an imaginary Gruffalo to scare away the other animals. But then, the mouse gets a big surprise when the Gruffalo shows up. This is not a scary book; it is just fun.
My Lucky Day
My Lucky Day is about a very adventurous, crafty piglet who likes to visits his neighbors. First, he visits the fox who prepares the piglet for his meal. But the piglet is so smart he gets a bath, a massage and a meal out of the deal. He outsmarts the exhausted fox and runs away taking the desert home with him. He is very smart, maybe a little bit stupid, very adventurous, and a whole lot lucky!
I’m a Duck
A duckling is very happy to find out that he’s a duck. He is thrilled with duck life and all that he can do. Then he learns to fly and he doesn’t think life can get any better until a girl quacks back. She changes his life and he’s amazed that she knows how to make a nest and what to do with the eggs. Then they hatch and they are all – ducks! They leave tiny tracks and they quack back. The duck is thrilled with being a duck and a dad! Mom calls this a living book because it tells about the life cycle and has facts about ducks within the story.
A Wish to be a Christmas Tree
My Grandma bought this book for my siblings and I really like it too. It is about a very old pine tree who watches his children, grandchildren and great grand children all get picked to become a Christmas trees. He is sad. One night, all the animals realize how much the big tree provides for them and they don’t want to see him sad. They each donate some pretty objects and when the old pine tree wakes up – he finds that he is a beautiful Christmas Tree. The animals get to tell him thank you for all he provided for them. Christmas is not about being picked to be a tree, but it is about how much you help and provide for others during the year. Adults like this book too!
Gobble Gobble Crash! A Barnyard Counting Bash
This is also one of my favorite childhood books because it has a lot of noise and action. Gobble Gobble Crash is a counting book about a bunch of crazy, noisy turkeys who like to upset the whole barnyard in the middle of the night. But when they wake the farmer up and he threatens to turn them into dinners the whole barnyard falls asleep protecting the noisy turkeys. This book is about counting and finding hidden turkeys.
Make Way for Ducklings
This book is older than my mom! (Mom: True. It was written in 1941.) It is about Mrs. Mallard who wants to take her ducklings to the Boston Public Gardens to live. To get there, she needs help crossing the busy streets of the city. She gets help from the police who makes sure she and Jack, Kack, Lack, Nack, Ouack, Pack and Quack stay safe during their move.
What I really like about this book is that you can take it to Boston and follow the story through the real streets of Boston!
Sheep in a Jeep
Beep! Beep! A beginning reader for children who are just learning to read. It is a funny book about a bunch of sheep who buy a jeep and then have to sell it cheap, after they crash. There are other books about these crazy sheep. I enjoyed reading all of them.
A Porcupine Name Fluffly
Mr. and Mrs. Porcupine have to find a name for their baby and they call him Fluffy. But one day, Fluffy began to doubt that he was fluffy. He stuck to a door and his quills go through his bed mattress. Fluffy spends a lot of time trying to be fluffy. Then he meets a rhino named Hippo and they become good friends. This is a very funny book and has cute pictures too. It is okay to be friends with people who are different than yourself.
Little Otter’s Big Journey
Little Otter is afraid to go into the ocean with his mother so she wraps him in seaweed and tells him to stay put. He got bored and wandered off to meet other animals. When he realizes he has floated out to sea, he is cold and wet. His mom finds him and he has to conquer his fear of swimming under water to get away from the cold waves. When he does he realizes what he was missing. He vows to swim with his mom everyday and to never float away from her again. Mom promises that she will always find him.
Horace
Horace knows that he is adopted. He is not comfortable because he realizes that his fur is different than his parents because they are striped. Horace runs away to find others who looks like him. He finds a spotted family and plays all day with them but at night he misses his family routine. His parents find him. They tell him his story again about how he lost his first family and needed a new family. His striped parents like his spots and chose him to be their child.
