We really needed an easy method for Lego organization. It is impossible for kids to build with Legos if they have to scratch and dig through thousands of little pieces. Andrew came to me for help when he discovered he was spending more time searching than building so we went to the internet. We found two dads who wrote about the same problem. Both sorted according to color, while one purchased a tool bin with drawers and the other purchased an IKEA Alex drawer organizer.

Choosing Storage
I was sold on color organization, but I didn’t have the space to dedicate to a tool bin or a new chest of drawers. I also didn’t want to allocate a large portion of the budget just to purchase storage. We ended up using 14 X 11 X 3.25 Sterlite containers. I like the fact that they stack, and they are roomy enough for sifting and sorting when looking for a certain piece.
Color Sorting for Lego Organization
Andrew and I spent several hours sorting Legos by color: Red, Yellow/orange, gray, black, blue and white were the majority of large assortments.
We also had a pile of clear colored pieces, minifigure pieces, and an assortment of odds and ends. For the latter we used a multi-sectional container.
Sterlite Containers
The Sterlite containers worked great and they were cheaper than purchasing another piece of furniture.
They stack and sit neatly under Andrew’s bed or in shelving cubbies while waiting for the next bout of creativity. Our finished project resulted in several new projects Lego projects built. This definitely proved to be an easy method for Lego organization!
